The lane departure prevention system, on a daily basis
February 24 2021,
The vehicles we drive today are lined with safety devices. We've gotten to know them well, but it's not always easy to see how well they can serve us in a given situation.
For example, we understand that the Active Lane Keeping Assist Lane Departure Prevention System warns us when we are about to leave our lane, but can it really help us? After all, aren't you in control of your own vehicle?
Yes, but not 100% of the time. And that's where the system can come in to save us, literally. Here are a few concrete examples.
Visibility
Sometimes the driving situations we encounter can result in very poor visibility of the surface we are driving on. This can be the case during very heavy rain, for example. Moreover, in this type of situation, our attention is not focused on the limits of our lanes, but on what we manage to see in front of us.
With such attention focused on one thing, it is possible that we deviate from the center of our lane and the system detects it long before we realize it. At that point, the alert sent to us, whether it's in the form of a steering wheel vibration or a sound, can really be beneficial.
Entering a tunnel
One of the situations that we experience from time to time at the wheel comes on a day when the sun is very intense, and we are about to enter a tunnel. You've probably experienced it before and it's inevitable that you'll be blinded for a few seconds. It then seem interminable to us. An emergency braking system, as well as a lane assist system, then becomes a precious ally while our eyes get used to the darkness so that we can really regain control of our Mercedes-Benz.
Driving at night
Humans are made to sleep at night. If you are called upon to ride outside of normal hours, you may feel tired, especially if your ride is longer than it is short. Combined with darkness, this can have disastrous consequences. Luckily, the way the Lane Departure Prevention System intervenes allows us to regain control (and our senses) before it's too late.
It's easy to think you're all-powerful behind the wheel, but it only takes a few seconds for things to get out of control. So, the next time you feel like turning off a safety system, think twice.
