Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC system: How does it work?
July 08 2020,
Every manufacturer today offers an all-wheel drive system, but even though they all have a very similar function, they don't all react in the same way.
Let's take a look at how Mercedes-Benz's 4MATIC system takes shape.
4MATIC: How does it work?
Mercedes 4MATIC technology, aside from having the ability to distribute power to all four wheels, is an intelligent system that works in conjunction with other Mercedes-Benz safety features. This allows it to automatically adjust itself according to road surface or weather conditions, without any driver intervention.
The 4MATIC system works in tandem with other safety features including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Four-Wheel Drive (EFD) and Stability Control (SCS).
The system is mated to a seven-speed or nine-speed automatic transmission in addition to the safety features mentioned. The gearbox manages the requirements of each wheel of the vehicle. Also, depending on the model, the system may have different features; an SUV like the G-Class doesn't benefit from the same module as the A-Class sedan.
Benefits?
The obvious advantage of the 4MATIC is of course to benefit from a system capable of activating all four wheels of the vehicle. It goes further than that, however, as it is not only useful on slippery surfaces. In fact, at all times, it improves stability because all four wheels are used to propel the car. This allows for a greater sense of security in difficult weather conditions such as rain or any other situation that could present a risk. In spirited driving, the grip is increased to a maximum level... and reassuring.
Is it always in use?
Some systems on the market are said to be permanent while others are said to be temporary. The 4MATIC system is a permanent all-wheel drive system. Generally, it distributes torque in a 55/45 ratio (front/rear). Depending on the situation, up to 70% of the torque can be distributed where it is required. As a result, you can always count on it, even when you think it's inactive. Its work is in fact as invisible as it is effective.
